Coppice are crowned North West champs

Oldham's Coppice United are the new North West football champions after they won this year's Asian Image Cup.

The tournament held at the Blackburn Rovers Youth Academy in Brockhall Village saw eight teams compete for the title and it was Coppice who won the day beating holders Asia in the final.

They scored 15 goals in their three games and in the final beat Rochdale's Asia who had earlier dumped both Blackburn United and Preston's Canaries out of the tournament.

A dogged Asia refused to go out without a fight and came from behind not once but twice in two days to book their place in the final.

For two days they forced extra-time by scoring in injury-time and on both occasions they won.

Canaries and Blackburn United might well count themselves unlucky but they had the chances to finish Asia off but failed to take them.

Asia's energy levels were impressive and they came back when other sides would have given up. Both full-backs must have covered every inch of those Academy pitches.

Against Canaries manager Saeed's last throw of the dice worked and then remarkably it worked again the day after.

To ask the lads to do it again three days in a row was asking too much.

The final began with Asia taking a lead through an Adam Kareem free-kick.

It was gritty start to a match much like the derby's of old.

Coppice looked very slow off the mark but came alive thanks to the midfield play of Danny O'Connell.

It was his pin-point through ball that allowed the lively Waqas Yunis to equalise. Minutes later Coppice turned the game on it's head after O'Connell slotted home a a pressure penalty.

O'Connell should have done better five minutes later but luckily for Coppice the miss was not crucial.

Asia who had been dubbed the Germany of this tournament after coming from behind to win pressed for an equalizer.

But Yasser on the right and Kesar were well marshalled by Coppice and their attacking play was broken up again and again.

Coppice needed another and soon got it as man of the match Ikram Daud beat two men before curling a right foot shot into the top corner.

As the minutes ticked by those who had headed home early over the weekend stuck around waiting for another Asia comeback. But Coppice defended well and Asia were forced to pump long balls into the penalty box. Those were dealt with comfortably by the Coppice centre-backs and midfielder Farooq who throughout the second half played with a strange looking bandage on his head after an earlier clash.

Asia got one goal back but this time it was too little too late as Coppice held on to be crowned the kings of the North West.

This was their first appearance in the tournament but the neat one two's, quick feet and lethal finishing won them a lot of friends.

For Asia they did bring two earlier matches alive with some thrilling finishes but here they just couldn't keep up with a Coppice side who were firing on all cylinders and brimming with confidence.

Well played to all the Coppice team for their performances in the tournament. Also a thanks to the organisers who arranged the tournament to be held at the academy which I'm sure all the teams competing enjoyed playing on.
P.S. As winners will Coppice now represent the North-West in Glasgow this year?????

i dont know which final some people were watching but i as an asia player have to congrat the coppice lads they played the much better football it wasnt one of our better days and we were just not good enough infront of goal coppice scored 15 in three and asia 7 in 3coppice deseved the win well done lads

Football's a simple game and the team that scores more than their opponents generally deserves to win.In this tournament you have to win all three games with no second chances or you are knocked out.

gud final but coppice did not deserve it.. they had some lucky breaks... had two gifts of a goal, one down to bad defending and the other from stupid challenge.. they had a couple of breaks but thats it. asia had much more of the attack and teh second half was basically in coppice 18 yard box. Also asia had two tough previous games... preston and blackburn... its not easy to recover from them. coppice had an easy route to the final. They had a few good players but a p**s poor defence... nothing special...asis should have done better. scoring 15 goals does not mean you're a great team, just means you played against poorer teams. coppice you were lucky!!!!

jeelu wat u talkin bout coppice defence conceeded less goals than asia and you can only beat what u come up against and coppice beat every team they played thats all they could do and nelson are not that bad of a team who coppice played in the first round in fact the players are saying asia and nelson were similar hitting long balls all game anyway coppice just let the football do the talking.

firstly jeelu, go back to nelson, nd turn up with a better team next time round. embarassing for how long u hav been set up. sounds like sour grapes ther. coppice have only been together 3 years. bt can the real coppice turn up next time tho. drafting in players isnt really a true reflection on how ur perfrming in ur local leagues. tut tut tut!

Muppet, i'm from nelson... i was on the side line watching them. Nelson had many of their first team players missing but with a full squad we would have beaten you for sure. Then you played a joke of team that conceeded 8 goals. Next time you're in blackburn or nelson ask what they thought of coppice. if you have traitors in your team you have to draft in players and at least they are all from oldham no outsiders here we represent oldham and the reason for poor league is we couldnt draft in players as the deadline for signing players in the league was gone otherwise the traitors would have been booted out a long time ago

For grown ups around the region this is a poor attitude to take up.There were some good games in the tournament and we could spend all day debating whether one team deserved it or not but all of you should be mature enough to realise its only a game of football. You should stop bickering and focus on the more important things like becoming better muslims instead of feuding with each other. Inshallah I pray we dont have any more silly comments here besides football related comments.

For a bunch of adults this forum is a poor reflection for all of us.I hope All the teams enjoyed the event and we can be here all day debating all sorts of aspects of the game but please realise that it is only a game. There are more important things in life such as all of us bettering ourselves as muslims and stop bickering like this.There should be more respect for each other through events like these so please take the positives out of it and leave the other stuff alone. Regardless of players location in a 11 a side tournament the whole team has to perform well as Nelson, Asia, Blackburn and Preston have shown in previous years having won the title and representing the North-West with dignity. I am sure that all of these comments intended to stir discontent among fellow players is being done by people who were not even there spectating or participating in the tournament.

as captain of asia .i would like to thank the organisers and the officials for putting on an excellent tournament.guys after reading many comments on this forum ...it doesn't matter all credit to coppice united /paris glodwick f.c .they wanted it on the day.our lads after playing two tough games we were knackered WE ONLY PLAYED PLAYERS THAT WERE REGISTERED TO PLAY FOR THE CLUB.WE FOLLOWED THE RULES THAT WERE SET BY THE COMMITEE . we re looking forward to getting our trophy back next year... we ll concentrate on trying to win our league in the mean time..good luck to all the other teams for the rest of the season.it was agood week end overall .see you all next year.inshaalah.

westwood have played coppice twice and got beat twice convincingly like asia in the final and also coppice play in the premier division and westwood in the second division of oldham sunday league they are a good 7 a side team but coppice way better in 11 a side hope that clears that issue up

im sure there is always people on here moaning after the northwest championships ESPECIALLY AFTER ASIA are involved i can recall similar comments from last year when asia played blackburn most asia lads are ok but i think some cant take losing maybe its the ones who chose asia over coppice and then lost in the final coppice got on with every team in the tournament and wish all the teams good luck and hopefully see them again next year.

Well said Paak (nelson)!!! It was a good game between us played in a friendly atmosphere and hopefully we can play again. It is a shame that Danny wouldnt be allowed to play. Thanks for pointing out that the winner of this competition should go and represent the North-West as Nelson, Asia, Preston and Blackburn have done after winning the competition. Unfortunately certain teams may get a handout from glasgow and would accept even though they havnt earnt the right to do so. Good luck for your upcoming final.When is it??

well for the past couple of years both finalists have gone to glasgow so its only fair that the winner of the tournament goes to represent the area as you have proven that you're the best team in the north west. Final is on friday, we're still recovering from our pathetic performance against u lot. I think we should sort out a friendly, we want revenge!!!

Good luck for your final!! We can sort out a friendly before the start of the next season.Just ask Shuaib and he will pass on our numbers and we can get something organised. You never know with football politics though. It might be the case that one or maybe two other teams go up to glasgow and as winners we may not get to go. Doesnt seem fair but if teams will accept handouts what can you do!!

Thanks for the facts D. It looks likes Westwood FC are a team full of big talks but no success....I believe they may end up playing in the same league as Coppice Utd becuase they have been promoted and Coppice Utd relegated. Both gona end up in Division 1...Hopefuly it'l give Coppice Utd chance to kick der @@@@ again!!

no i dont think they will be in same league cuz nobody will get relegated from premier division only seven teams to be honest the oldham sunday league this year was a joke too many teams dropped out nex season there will be only 3 divisions with twelve teams in each it will be alot more competitive and coppice will be up there westwood are in the playoff to see if they will play in 1st division or second but coppice will be in top division and although coppice had poor league run they did well to get to 2 semis in cups the big one they got beat on penalties its a shame really cuz coppice would love to play westwood any day of week but coppice look a very good team going into next season hopefully few more tournaments during summer to put them on map but at moment coppice are best 11 a side asian team in oldham until nex year north west after winning asian image cup

Calm down Sona. Real footballers play eleven a side football. By the way how many of your team can play 11 a side football "the mans game". Everyone knows to be a good player you need to dominate 11 a side leagues and tournaments so grow up with your petty tinpot trophies. iv been around for time and i will tell the truth i dont need to take any sides anyone who abandons where they live and represent a different team is a traitor in my eyes i dont always agree with the management but reswpect what it has to say i can only give my opinion and if you guys were still playin it would be a good close game hopefully you will come back with your best players cuz we would love to play u probably be a better game than it was with asia and were confident we will do you guys the last two games we played with orb was one draw one winbut they folded so dont know wat to make of it

First of all, the final was played by the only 2 teams that never put more than 2 passes together!

You were both so poor, it's a shame to all in North West that you guys played in the Final.

I watched the game with my Eagle Eye and trust me, you both have nothing to be proud of.
