ADAM Azim has written his name into the history books after retaining the England Boxing National Junior Championship.

Azim, 15, has successfully defended his Class B 54-57kg title after eliminating Louai Ali in the semi-finals, before a win against Edward Harty in the final last weekend.

The Slough-based star is now a six-time national champion and told the Observer: “I am really proud because I’m the only 2002 boy to win it twice, no-one has done that before.

“The semi-final against Louai was a difficult fight. We went to war but I boxed his head off in the last two rounds.

“In the final, I picked off Edward and won quite easily. He kept on coming forward so I did what I had to do. The final was quite easy but the semi-final was a lot harder.

“I’m really proud and everything is going good. I’m just breaking records all the time.

“It’s really good and comes down to discipline. How you eat, sleep and train - I train three times a day.”

Azim will now box for England in the Tri Nations competition in Scotland where he will go for a record third title, before targeting gold at the European Championships in Russia this October.

He said: “I think it (Tri Nations) will be easy if I can put my head down and train hard. I won it in 2016 and 2017 so to do it again would create a lot more history.

“I’m hoping to become an eight-time champion if I can go to the European Championships and win gold in Russia. That’s my goal.

“I’m ready for the next level, the international stage, but it’s hard because you have to adapt and fight people from different countries.”
