A 16-year-old boxer from Minnesota, USA is now permitted to compete in boxing matches while wearing her hijab.
Amaiya Zafar was previously barred from competing due to the USA Boxing’s religious head covering rule.
However, the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced that the USA Boxing has provided an exemption for the teen.
Amaiya will now be able to compete whilst wearing a headscarf, leggings and long sleeves.
Previously, the mandate required her to wear a sleeveless jersey and shorts that don’t go below the knee.
Speaking to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Amaiya said, “I’m ready.
“You get so invested. My weight is in the right place. My head is in the game.”
Amaiya's coach Nathaniel Haile added, "This is a big step. She’s put a lot of labour into this. She earned the right to showcase her skills, and I’m happy for her. But it’s just the first step in letting her achieve her dreams."
