Shoaib Malik continued to make England pay for his no-ball let-off at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, as he moved to a career-best 168 not out on the second morning of the first Test.

Shoaib, caught off Stuart Broad on 40 on Tuesday afternoon only to survive when a marginal overstep was detected, underpinned Pakistan's lunchtime 389 for four.

The hosts, who resumed on 286, therefore moved into position during a wicketless session to control the remainder of this first match of three.

Debutant leg-spinner Adil Rashid, given the opportunity to see if a harder new ball might help him become more of a threat on a benign surface, instead suffered most as his figures extended to nought for 122.

England also had cause for regret at dropping Asad Shafiq (66no), on 10 the previous evening, as he helped Shoaib add an unbroken 138.

The aggregate cost of dropping Mohammad Hafeez early on the first morning, then reprieving both Shafiq and Shoaib, spiralled to 275 runs.

Shafiq was especially cautious in the early stages of his innings, but became more adventurous to reach a 107-ball 50.

Shoaib, in his first Test for more than five years, just kept rolling on - with a comeback double-century in his sights.
