A cricket tournament held in memory of two men who sadly died of cancer raised an astounding £2,100.

The Taj Hussain and Mohammed Afzal memorial trophy was eventually won by Nelson side Whitefield after a fantastic day of cricket.

Whitefield amassed a massive 120 runs from six overs in the final and despite a valiant effort surprise finalists, All Stars, could only manage 70.

The final was watched by over 100 cricket fans from across the region.

Dilawar Hussain said: “We would like to thank everyone for turning out and showing their support throughout the day.

“We are especially thankful to the umpires and the volunteers who helped to put this tournament together.

“It was pleasing to see so many people watching the final games and supporting the teams.”

Tasleem Fazal said: “On the behalf of my brothers Arshad, Naime and nephews Ansar and Muddasar and the family, a very humble and heartfelt thank you to everyone. Thank you to all those who have taken time out to remember our older brother and Taj.

“We hope everyone will continue to support and participate in keeping the memories of our dear brothers alive by way of this tournament in years to come.”

The tournament was co-organised by Naeem Fazal and Mohammed Rizwan.

Whitefield, who were commended by the umpires for the great spirit they played the game in, reached the final by beating Nightriders CC, whilst All Stars overcame Gujrat CC.

Organisers would like to thank the Blackburn Mid-week Cricket League and its chairman for helping to arrange the pitches. A huge thank you also to InFlux Creative Design.
