Fifty-four badminton players battled it out at a regional tournament in Preston.

Organised by father and son Mohammed Kabir Sharif and Abbas Ali, both qualified badminton England coaches, the competition saw players from 18 different towns and cities take part.

In the first semi-final Abbas Ali Sharif and Ashlin Augustine took on Azam Ali Sharif and Julian. Two brothers on opposite sides of the court! And it was Abbas and Ashlin who won 21/15 in a pulsating affair.

In the other semi-final Rashid Riaz and Tom Reid battled it out against Richard Langford and Neil. Rashid and Tom proved to be too strong for the opposition to book their place in the final.

The final was the best of three games and after another tense match Abbas and Ashlin ran out winners.

The Player of the Tournament trophy was won by Robert Langford who, at the age of only 15, played well beyond his years.

Trophies, medals and the free fruit was sponsored by Kashmir Watan Food store. Free vouchers were presented to winners and runner-ups by Ashiana restaurant. All players, spectators and guests also got gifts from sponsors R K Sweets.

Mohammed Kabir Sharif said: “We would like to thank all the players for making this a huge success. We would also like to thank the local businesses who backed this event.”

Special guests on the day included Yunus Suleman, Badminton England publicity secretary and Laurie Bly who has won the Mid-Lancashire men’s doubles several times.

Father and son Mohammed and Abbas help to the run the KBS and ABZ Badminton club on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
