Communications between on-field and television umpires are to be aired during Australia's forthcoming one-day international series with South Africa.

The International Cricket Council announced it would conduct a trial period for the host broadcaster, the Nine Network, to air umpire referrals, consultations and DRS player reviews in the five-match series.

"This initiative is part of ICC's efforts to make umpiring more understandable to viewers and spectators," said an ICC statement.

Should it prove successful, then the governing body may opt to extend the trial into next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

ICC general manager Geoff Allardice said: "For years viewers have enjoyed seeing the same pictures as the TV umpire and making their own decisions during a referral or review.

"Now they will be even closer to the game, hearing what the umpire is saying when making those decisions."
