There has been late splurge on players as the transfer window closed. But what were the most important transfers this season so far?

5 – Robert Lewandowski A transfer that was agreed in January but formally completed earlier this month meant that Polish goal machine Robert Lewandowski would move from Dortmund to bitter rivals Bayern Munich on a free. Yes, a free! He will join world cup-winning playmaker Mario Gotze who made the same move exactly a year ago. The only area in an irresistible Munich side that can be seen lacking has now been filled by the powerful striker.

4 – Cesc Fabregas The former Arsenal midfielder joined Chelsea after Arsenal decided not to activate his buy-back option. He will replace club legend Frank Lampard and will bolster the midfield for the Blues. After failing to earn a regular place at Barcelona, the Spaniard felt that Chelsea was “the best choice” to kick start his career once again. He cost the Blues £30m.

3 - Alexis Sanchez One of the stars of the world cup, Chilean Alexis Sanchez made his big money move to Arsenal. Once heavily linked to Liverpool, the forward opted instead to join the north London side. Arsenal, who promised to spend big this year, splashed out £35m on the former Barcelona man who brings creativity, flair and quality to his new side. He is sure to spice up the Premier League.

2 – Luis Suarez The controversial Uruguayan superstar finally made his dream move to Catalan giants Barcelona for a whopping £75m, becoming the third most expensive signing ever. He is now allowed to train with his teammates after a successful appeal, although he won’t be able to feature until October 26. There are surely exciting times ahead as he will be playing alongside the likes of Messi and Neymar. The striker had an incredible season for Liverpool, smashing in 31 goals and providing 12 assists in just 33 games.

1 – Angel Di Maria The man who cost Manchester United £59.7m and broke the British record transfer fee, eclipsing the £50m Chelsea paid for Fernando Torres. The silky winger had an impressive World Cup, though he missed the final through injury. Arguably Real Madrid’s most important player last year, ahead of the likes of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, was influential in their Champions League triumph. Madrid fans were infuriated to hear about his move to Manchester, which ultimately shows what an incredible signing he really is. Since 2010 he has amassed an amazing 49 assists and for that reason deserves to be the ‘signing of the summer’.
