The first ever eyelash transplant in the UK was performed by a North West surgeon.
Hair Transplant and Aesthetic Surgeon, Mr Asim Iqbal Shahmalak, who has a private clinic in Cheshire has become the first surgeon to perform this groundbreaking operation .
The female patient, had no eyelashes due to excessive pulling of eyelashes, a condition known as ‘Trichotillo Mania’.
The process entailed an operation where the hairs were taken .out from the back of the head and were painstakingly transplanted, one by one into the upper eyelid.
Awarded his medical degree in 1987, Mr Shahmalak has excellent surgical skills and technique for which he is widely known and respected.
Mr Shahmalak uses a special technique called The ‘Trichophytic Closure’ which leaves an almost invisible scar at the donor site and the hair grows through the scar leaving the donor area scar almost impossible to find.
Mr Shahmalak said, "The surgery is the first of its kind in the UK and I am very proud to be the first surgeon to have performed such an operation.
"Successful hair transplantation gives a more youthful appearance and improved self confidence and self esteem.
"The benefits should last a lifetime. It is an intensive procedure requiring patience, skill and precision It will benefit people who have no eye lashes due to some medical conditions, such as burns etc. It can also be performed for cosmetic enhancement of eyelashes."
