Google has honoured celebrated actor Omar Sharif today on what would have been his 86th birthday.

He was a cinematic star for decades but is best remembered for his role in Lawrence of Arabia.

He also went on to appear in Doctor Zhivago, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

Omar Sharif was born Michel Demitri Chalhoub in Alexandria in 1932 - the son of Lebanese-Syrian Christians.

Raised a Roman Catholic and from a wealthy family, the actor converted to Islam and changed his name in order to marry his leading lady, who was Muslim and from a conservative and less wealthy background.

His funeral in 2015 was held in Cairo.
