Ramadan this year has seen a record number of visitors to the holy city of Makkah.
Over 14 million Muslims visited the city in the first 16 days of Ramadan which is a 40% increase over the same period in 2014, according to the Central Hajj Committee as reported by Arab News.
Approximately 5 million of those visitors are said to foreigners.
Secretary of the Central Hajj Committee, Salah Saqr reportedly said, “The plan for this Ramadan involves transporting 25 million people in 30 days.”
Facilities inside the Grand Mosque have recently been updated with six new plasma screens installed inside the mosque and its courtyards for broadcasting prayers and announcements in multiple languages.
Extra provisions have also been made to ensure there are ample electronic wheel chairs and carts for visitors with special needs.
Over 1.5 billion Muslims around the world are celebrating Ramadan by abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn until sunset.
