THE leader of Slough Borough Council says he has been feeling suicidal since his suspension from the Labour party – and wrote a desperate letter to Jeremy Corbyn asking for help.

Cllr Sohail Munawar, pictured, said he wrote the emotional letter to the Labour leader, deputy leader Tom Watson, and the general secretary Ian McNicol, after being placed under investigation following complaints from two councillors.

He has also exclusively revealed to The Observer that he collapsed twice following the news of his suspension from the party on Friday, November 3, including while working in his office at the town hall.

He said: “I had had enough, I was broken. I received this letter on a Friday morning and since then it had been a rollercoaster. It has taken so much out of me, out of my family.”

Cllr Munawar said the Labour leadership did not respond to his letter, but he was immediately contacted by the party who passed him on to support workers.

One complaint concerns a pornographic video clip sent from Cllr Munawar’s mobile phone to numerous colleagues last year, which was raised at the time but later dropped.

Cllr Munawar said the ‘disgusting’ porn video clip was sent to his mobile late one night. It showed images of a naked woman and a cucumber. He said he attempted to delete the footage by closing his mobile, but it sent the clip to all his contacts, friends and family - including his mother.

He said: “I am innocent of any wrongdoing. This has become a nightmare that simply will not end. and it can happen to anybody.”

Cllr Munawar has been suspended pending the outcome of the party probe, and the Labour Group in Slough has also removed him as group leader. He has been replaced by Cllr Sabia Hussain.

The second complaint concerns an allegation of bullying and harassment.

Cllr Munawar said he collapsed on Monday, November 6, at the council’s offices in St Martin’s Place and broke down in tears.

He said he had blacked our for around two minutes. He said: “I just lost it. I collapsed on a chair and wept buckets of tears. Someone brought me a glass of water. I recovered after about half an hour.

“Staff have been great to me, still smile at me and hug me. But my Labour colleagues cannot speak to me and I cannot speak to them.”

He added that interim chief, Roger Parkin, and other staff had sat with him for around two hours until he settled down. He added: “People supported me and that was very humbling.”

In the letter, he refers to having to remove rubbish from his front door after it was left there by people, following his suspension. The police were sent to his home by an anonymous well-wisher to check he was okay.

Cllr Munawar was appointed council leader in the summer of 2016, but he said the porn video clip was sent almost six months prior to that.

He said: “I was sitting at home watching television about 11pm when my phone signalled that a message was waiting. I opened it and saw to my horror that it was displaying a naked woman and a cucumber.

“It also showed a phone number which I committed to memory but did not write down. I then closed the phone, thinking that would delete the footage.

“To my amazement over the next hours and days people contacted me thinking I had gone mad because they had all received the images.

“I explained that I had been attacked by a scammer or a virus and that it had nothing to do with me. Fortunately people who know me well accepted that I was a victim.”

He said he attempted to call the anonymous sender back but received no response.

After the complaint was made about the clip by a colleague, it was eventually dropped. But Cllr Munawar said he had asked the monitoring officer at the time to finish the investigation to clear his name.

His main grievance is with his party, which he says should have carried out the investigation before suspending him. He added: “If they find me guilty I will do the right thing and resign immediately. But I am innocent, and have never sexually harassed or bullied anybody in my life.”
