A wedding venue where a ceiling collapsed during a school awards night has been sealed off after an inspection by safety experts.

The Acivico Building Consultancy said the remaining ceiling structure within Birmingham's Al Miraj Banqueting Suites was potentially dangerous.

A 10-year-old girl was treated for a minor facial injury caused by glass after plasterboard forming part of a suspended ceiling plunged onto a dining area during a graduation event organised for the Tyseley-based Al Ameen Islamic primary school.

A further five patients were either assessed or treated for minor complaints or shock after the collapse at about 8pm on Thursday.

Richard Cymler, the head of the Acivico consultancy, which is owned by Birmingham City Council, said: "The building has been secured and entry prohibited to protect members of the public.

"Follow-up action under Section 77 of the Building Act 1984 is in progress and Building Consultancy is liaising with the building owners to commission an independent structural survey of the remaining ceiling structure and implement remedial work to remove any residual danger before the building is reopened."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Upon arrival, ambulance staff found hundreds of people outside the venue who had managed to escape after the ceiling had collapsed.

"Working in partnership with police and fire, five casualties were quickly identified and received immediate treatment by ambulance staff.

"The Trust's Hazardous Area Response Team paramedics, who are specially trained with urban search and rescue capabilities, worked with the fire service inside the venue to help conduct a search for any potential people trapped inside.

"Thankfully, everyone had managed to escape and there were no further patients found.

"Whilst we treated six people following the incident, it was incredibly lucky that no one was more seriously or even fatally injured."
