Muslim children and Jewish people from Harrow synagogues came together to help refugees and the homeless on Sunday.

The 800 children from Stanmore Sunday School joined Jewish members of synagogues in Pinner, Northwood and Edgware at Northwood School on Sadaqa Day, a Muslim-led day of social action.

The projects included a collection for Sufra food bank, a rucksack project for the refugee council, with the children packing rucksacks with school supplies for refugee children and a Mother’s Day gift box project through the charity Al-Mizan.

Sunday school departmental head Imran Chatoo said: “It was pivotal for us to be joined by our Jewish friends, especially at this current time when Islam is intensely under the spotlight.”

The children also brought in their favourite books to give to refugee children through the Salisbury World charity, which included letter from the children explaining why they loved the books.

Synagogues involved in the event included of Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue, Pinner United Synagogue, Edgware & District Reform Synagogue and JW3.

Rabbi Lea Mühlstein, of Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue, added: “The children and adults helped many vulnerable people and those finding refuge in this country, and even more importantly, strengthened the bond of friendship between the Muslim and Jewish communities of Harrow and Hillingdon.”

There were also hygiene stations for the Refugee Council and Sufra food bank, as well as a bake stall and presentations on the importance of charity within Islam.

The partnership between these communities were first founded through Mitzvah Day, a Jewish-led day of social action held every November.
