UPDATED: Six British citizens including an infant have been killed and more injured following a vehicle crash in Saudi Arabia.

The victims are from Manchester and Glasgow and were travelling on the road between Makkah and Medina.

The crash happened approximately 140 km from Makkah yesterday (January 18) afternoon when the group were travelling in a minibus.

The tour operator Haji Tours based in Manchester with whom the victims booked their visits have confirmed the deaths and were liaising with families and the Foreign Office when we spoke to them this morning.

They group were performing the Umrah and had travelled to Jeddah on January 12 and were due to return later in the month.

The tour operator offered their condolences to family members and asked the community to pray for the the deceased.

They also said they were arranging visas for immediate family members. The injured, one of whom who was said to be still critical, were taken to Medina Hospital.

A Foreign Office Spokesman “We are supporting the families of six British people who have sadly died following a road accident in Saudi Arabia.

"We are also helping several more British nationals who were injured in the crash. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families at this very difficult time.”

UPDATES Four people from Manchester lost their lives.

A grandmother and her newborn grandson, from Chorlton died.

A man and a woman from the same family also lost their lives.

Nadesh Ikbal, who’s mother was injured in the crash, told the MEN, “My mother has lost two sisters in the crash. Her other sister, my auntie, has also been injured.

“A child, who is almost two months old, has died and his mother is in hospital with her other two children.

“We are flying out to Medina as soon as we can. As a family we need as much help as possible at this terrible time.”

The Glasgow couple have been named as Mohammad Aslam and his wife Talat Aslam.

A statement from Glasgow Central Mosque read, “Mr Mohammad Aslam and Mrs Talat Aslam of Glasgow, the parents of Shehla, Saba, Omar, Osman and Haroon, have returned to the mercy of Allah.

“On Wednesday January 18 they had just completed Umrah and were travelling in a minibus to visit our beloved Prophet’s Masjid in Madina. Tragically they were involved in a fatal accident.

“Four members of another family from Manchester were also killed in this tragedy.”

The youngest victim was named as Muhammad Adam Anis, who was just a few months old.

The baby's grandparents were named as, 64-year-old Khurshid Ahmed and Noshina Ahmed, 49, and family member Rabia Ahmad, 57, who were all from Manchester.
