A five-year-old boy kept his cool when his mother accidentally locked herself in the bathroom - leaving him and his three-year-old brother unsupervised in their flat.

Yousef Mostafa used his mother's mobile phone to call his father in Egypt and tell him what was happening.

His father called a friend in London, who contacted the Metropolitan Police, who then contacted Avon and Somerset Police.

Officers attended the seventh-floor flat in Baldwin Street in Bristol with Avon Fire and Rescue on Sunday afternoon.

Yousef's mother, Nahla Zahran, had been trapped in the bathroom for four hours.

PCSO Lauren Holt said: "This job initially came in as a concern for welfare.

"When we arrived, I was amazed at how calm and sensible the children were, especially given the fact they have only been in this country for a few weeks and speak very little English.

"Yousef had been speaking with his dad in Egypt on the phone, which had obviously helped to keep him calm.

"His dad had told him to stay in the flat. When we got there, he and his brother were watching cartoons in the kitchen.

"The locking mechanism on the bathroom door handle had broken and the door was very thick, so we could hardly hear his mum, but knew that she was panicking.

"We just did everything we could to reassure her that the children were fine and that we'd get her out as soon as possible.

"The only time the boys got a bit scared was when the firefighters were using a sledgehammer to try and get through the door, as it was very loud.

"I kept them out of the way and kept talking to them and telling them it was all going to be OK.

"When Mrs Zahran was finally freed, she just ran to her kids crying and hugging them, it was really lovely. She must have been so relieved that they were safe.

"Yousef is amazing - what a brave little boy, I can't believe he only turned five a few days ago. He is so sensible and should be very proud of himself."

Sarah Allen, group manager at Avon Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Firefighters were called after reports that a 40-year-old woman was shut in a bathroom on the seventh floor of an apartment block.

"When the crew from Temple fire station arrived, they found that the door handle to the bathroom had broken so firefighters had to break the door down.

"Yousef was very brave and we were very pleased to help reunite him and his brother with their mother."
