This morning, a large hole swallowed a car in Charlton, making national headlines and causing concern among residents.

Fortunately no one was in the car at the time of incident, which happened in Woodland Terrace, and no one has been injured.

There have been a number of amusing responses to the hole, not least from the brother of the car's owner, Ghazi Hassan.

Abdul Ahmadzai said there was "nothing I could do" after seeing the car precariously balanced in the early hours of this morning. He subsequently went back to bed.

Other reactions include this one, from Greenwich and Woolwich MP Matthew Pennycook, who speculated holes opening up in roads wasn't such a problem under the previous Labour government.

Some saw the incident as a metaphor for Charlton Athletic's decline.

Meanwhile News Shopper reader Matt Woollett sent us this version of the Charlton hole.

South-east London's various borough police forces have also wasted no time in exchanging banter.

While this Twitter account suggested the car might be emerging from the depths of hell.

And if that is the case, who knows what will happen next.
