A 41-year-old man accused of stabbing a pregnant woman has appeared in court by a prison video-link.

A brief hearing at Birmingham Crown Court heard that Babur Karamat Raja, from Sutton Coldfield, is likely to face trial in August.

Raja was arrested last month in the Trinity Hill area of Sutton Coldfield after a woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, suffered multiple wounds to her abdomen.

Wearing a black pullover, Raja, who has yet to enter a plea to two counts of attempted murder and one of attempted child destruction, appeared by video-link from HMP Birmingham and was told that his alleged victim was watching proceedings from the courtroom.

The defendant spoke only to give his name and confirm that he could see and understand the hearing, which lasted for around 20 minutes.

Judge Mark Wall QC remanded Raja in custody until a further preparatory hearing on May 23.
