A grandmother fatally injured in a hit-and-run has been named by police.

West Midlands Police said 68-year-old Zainib Bibi was knocked down by a car in the Alum Rock area of Birmingham and later died in hospital.

The driver of a white Fiat Marea which failed to stop at the scene in Burney Lane at about 2.05pm yesterday is still being sought over the crash.

The vehicle involved was later found abandoned with damage to the front end and a shattered windscreen.

It is now being scoured for clues by forensics officers as police The victim's family have released a photograph of the woman.

Sergeant Alan Wood, of West Midlands Police, said: "We urgently need to hear from anyone who can help us identify the driver.

"If you witnessed the collision and have yet to speak to police then I'd urge you to call us on the 101 number.

"Similarly, we'd like to hear from anyone who saw the white Fiat Marea - very noticeable with its windscreen smashed - being driven around Ward End and especially anyone who saw it being parked up in Old Moat Way.

"I'd also urge the driver of the car to do the right thing and get in touch so he can put across his side of the story and explain how the collision occurred."

The driver is described as an Asian man of large build.
