Birmingham has ruled out joining possible legal action to sue a US news channel which broadcast an inaccurate claim the city was a "no-go" zone for non-Muslims.

Fox News had to publicly apologise after a terrorism expert appeared on the network telling viewers "there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply don't go in".

Similar erroneous claims were also broadcast, separately, referencing parts of Paris, prompting the city's mayor Anne Hidalgo to announce her intention to sue the US news network.

However, Birmingham City Council said it would not be taking any part in any possible French legal bid, concluding "we've all moved on".

It described the original comment from Fox News pundit Steven Emerson as "a bit bonkers", but added both he and Fox News had since apologised.

Prime Minister David Cameron said when he heard those remarks about the UK's second city he "thought it must be April Fool's Day", describing Mr Emerson as a "a complete idiot".

Mr Emerson later apologised for his "terrible error", as did Fox News.

However, Ms Hidalgo told a US news channel she would be pursuing legal action against Fox in relation to the Paris claims, and said: "I'm insulted, and I think we'll sue.

"I think we'll have to go to court in order to have these words removed."

She added: "The image of Paris has been prejudiced and the honour of Paris has been prejudiced."

France is still coming to terms with the deadly attacks launched by Islamist gunmen on the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, police officers and a kosher supermarket, between January 7 - 9.

Meanwhile in Birmingham, Councillor James McKay, in charge of social cohesion, equalities and community safety, said it was all water under the bridge as far as the city's burghers were concerned.

He said: "The comments about Birmingham were a bit bonkers. We said so. Fox News corrected them. We've all moved on. End of story."

Mr Emerson was pilloried on social media by bemused Birmingham residents, leading to a rash of parody comments under the Twitter hashtag #FoxNewsFacts.

According to most recent census data from 2011, the city of more than one million residents has a Muslim population of about 234,000 (21.8%).
