Police investigating damage caused to a number of Muslim-owned shops have said the attacks were not religiously motivated.

West Midlands Police reassured the public that the "targeted" incidents in the Small Heath and Sparkbrook areas of Birmingham were not believed to be connected to either ethnicity or religion.

Inspector Jenny Richards, from Stechford police station, said: "Our investigation suggests that the attacks were not random, but we continue to appeal to the local community for information, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

"Initial CCTV inquiries show that a newer model silver Ford Mondeo may be involved, so I would also ask for information regarding this vehicle.

"Meanwhile patrols have been increased in the area to reassure the public that efforts are ongoing to trace those involved."
