Jay Sean makes a long awaited return with his new album Mistress 2. By HENNA SONI.

This week, he was at the University of Salford speaking to students about his career and passing on much needed advice the ups and downs of stardom.

It was one of a handful of appearances where he was able to speak to directly to students and some of his fans.

Having spent some time in America he said he was back in the UK and recalled a time before the superstar status kicked-in.

“I wasn’t trying to get noticed I was just enjoying making music. Music though was my second choice. My first choice was medicine “But if someone gives you an opportunity to sign to a record label, you take it!”

As the Asian Urban scene with colleagues Rishi Rich and Juggy D took-off, Jay started seeing a growth in his music career.

“I couldn’t walk around cities on my own. Fans would be like ‘Oh my god! You’re the new guy’ and that made me think I’ve actually got fans but that thought was a little crazy’.

His first independent album ‘My Own Way’ was a massive success and Jay soon found himself amongst the A-Listers across the Atlantic.

It was his 'Ride It' video that seemed to make US executives stand-up and take notice.

Signed by Cash Money Records in 2009, the artist then went onto become the first British male urban star to have a number one single in the US with 'Down' featuring Lil Wayne.

Similarly, Jay left the Cash Money record label after being committed to them since 2008. But after the record breaking successes of ‘Down’ and ‘Do you remember’ Jay it seems found himself tied down.

He wanted to break out and return to what he loved doing, ‘I don’t think I will ever be able to be signed to another record label if they don’t let me do what I want do anymore.’ He says.

Now, Jay Sean has gone back into making his own music with a new and independent record label.

With the new song ‘Tears in the Ocean’ which expresses his everlasting love for R&B, Jay makes a connection with the fans that grew to love him.

Mistress 2 is the R&B Mix tape allows fans to reconnect with Jay and it was something he was keen to stress.

“I have faith in my fans, faith in myself and faith in the fact that I make great music and that’s something that I’m proud of.”

‘Tears in the Ocean’ is already out but Jay’s album Mistress 2 is out on the 18 November.

This album will be free to download and the music video of the second song will be available to view on the same day.
