Acclaimed solo dancer Aakash Odedra Company brings its award-winning production 'Rising' to The Lowry, at Salford Quays, Manchester.

Aakash originally trained in the south Asian styles of Kathak and Bharatanatyam before developing his own distinctive performance style.

Rising is a quadruple bill of solos including works created for him by prestigious choreographers Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell and led to Odedra’s recognition as an international star of dance.

During 2013 acclaim for Rising resulted in Odedra winning ‘dancer of the year’ at the Festival Bolzano Danza in northern Italy, the ‘Audience Choice Award’ at a dance festival in Zagreb, Croatia, and a Dora Award in Toronto, Canada for ‘Best Male Performer’ and Best Dance Interpretation at Infant Festival, Serbia.

In October 2014 in New York he won a Bessie Award for Best Performer for his choreography for ‘Ecstasy’, an interpretation in Kathak to the works of James Brown, produced by Apollo Theater, NY.

Through his struggles with the condition dyslexia and finding written language alien, dance became Odedra’s preferred mode of expression.

In 2013 he was one of five performers to be awarded a Sky Academy Arts Scholarship in support of the creation of Murmur, currently touring the UK. Aakash’s journey during the project has also been captured by Sky Arts in a short film and as part of his aim to increase awareness about the frustrations Dyslexia can bring, he has accepted an ambassadorial role with national charity Dyslexia Action.

The show takes place on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th November, 8.00pm, as part of an international tour.
