A charity shop says it has been doing a roaring trade in Indian clothing after just two months since it opened.

Mind in Harrow’s first charity shop, in College Road, in Harrow town centre, only opened at the end of August and staff have seen Indian clothing fly off the shelves.

With the festival of lights just round the corner in the Hindu calendar, the shop is calling for more people to donate "a sari for Diwali".

Manager of the shop Joanna Boguszewska said: “We are a very new shop in Harrow but we have been amazed at how well saris and Indian clothing have done since we opened.”

Vipin Shah, assistant manager of the shop said: “I think the reason the clothing has so well is because it is festival season in the Hindu calendar.

“We just had Navratri and we have Diwali in a couple of weeks. People want their party outfits, but money is tight and they also want a bargain.

“People don’t want to dress in the same outfit for every event. So by coming here they can update their wardrobe and it not cost so much. But after doing so well we are desperate for more Indian clothing.

Mind in Harrow helps and supports thousands of people across the borough who have mental health issues and has been in operation for more than 40 years.

According to the charity, about 60 per cent of its service users are from the Asian community.

This week it was one of 15 Harrow charities to criticise Harrow Borough Council for cutting funding to the voluntary sector, which they say will have a “disastrous and irreversible impact.”

The shop is the charity’s first and only shop in Harrow and all money it raises goes towards helping those with mental health issues.

Those interested in donating Saris for Diwali or any other clothes and other items can do so by visiting the shop during opening hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
