A taxi driver shot dead in what police called an "execution-style" murder nearly 20 years ago have arrested two men over the killing.

Nottinghamshire Police said it had detained a 42-year-old and another man, aged 43, on suspicion of murdering Ethsham Ghafoor in 1994.

Mr Ghafoor, 26, known to family and friends as Shami and a father of two, was killed as he sat in his taxi in a Nottingham car park in the early hours of November 22.

Nobody has ever been charged over the shooting, which detectives previously described as "cold-blooded, pre-meditated murder".

A force spokesman said the arrested men would be "questioned in connection with the inquiry throughout the day".

Last November, the dead man's family launched a Facebook page dedicated to tracing his killers.

Today, in a statement on that website, the family said they were aware of the arrests and were "pleased" with the latest developments.

It read: "It shows that the police, like us, are still determined to find out who killed our Shami and see them brought to justice."

Last year, just before the anniversary of Mr Ghafoor's death, his mother Walayat Begum, who is now in her 70s, said her "only wish remaining is to see those responsible for my son's death brought to justice, in my lifetime.".

In an emotional appeal, she added: "I plead to anyone with information to make my suffering lighter.

"My pain is never-ending. As long as we are here, we will demand justice."
