A BUSINESS leader is 'awake and talking' after being attacked in the street earlier last month.

Shahed Mahmood, president of the Hyndburn Chamber of Trade, suffered head injuries when he was assaulted in Blackburn Road in Accrington.

The incident happened at 5.50pm on Tuesday, March 6, and he was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital, where he remains.

Colleagues of Mr Mahmood said he is now awake and talking as he continues his recovery.

The 49-year-old is due to stand as a Labour party candidate for the Immanuel ward in May's forthcoming local elections for Hyndburn Council.

A spokesman for Hyndburn Labour said: "We are pleased to let you know that Shahed Mahmood, our Labour colleague, is now awake and talking.

"At present, he continues to need rest and visiting is only for his family.

"We would like to send Shahed our best wishes over the Easter period and continue to keep him in our thoughts."

Friends and colleagues expressed their shock in the immediate aftermath after learning of the attack.

Police attended the incident which happened close to the junction with Princess Street.

Officers arrested a 27-year-old man from Accrington on suspicion of section 18 assault following the incident who was released on police bail until Tuesday, April 3.
