A DANGEROUS driver ‘could have killed someone’ when he crashed into a row of shop before then causing a head-on collision.

Aamir Patel was found to be almost three times over the drink-drive limit when he was breathalysed following the incident.

He was seen swerving around the road and driving on the wrong side of the carriageway after he smashed into a wall in the crash in Deane Road on November 9.

Patel previously pleaded guilty at Bolton Magistrates’ Court to dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle when the alcohol level is above the legal limit.

However, at a hearing yesterday, magistrates found that the offences were too serious for them to sentence and committed Patel to the crown court.

Jane Ann Deakin, prosecuting, told the court how a police officer had just finished his shift at about 8pm when he saw a black Mercedes E250 being driven by Patel n the Deane area.

The car was seen in College Way and it caught the officer’s attention because of the speed it was travelling at.

The car turned left into Deane Road and when the officer came around the corner six or seven seconds later, saw the car was now stopped.

Miss Deakin said it was obvious the car had crashed into the side of the Naz takeaway.

Patel had driven off and crashed into a parked car across the road before he began travelling again.

Miss Deakin said: “At the time there was at least seven people inside the takeaway and numerous people outside the takeaway. Fortunately nobody was injured.

“After the crash he was driving on the wrong side of the road and moving and snaking all over the road.

“He collided head-on with a Vauxhall on the wrong side of the road. He tried to drive off but was not able to do so.”

The police officer then detained Patel and called 999 for assistance leading to him being arrested.

When Patel was breathalysed he blew a reading of 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35.

Mohamed Patel, representing the defendant, said after getting home from work at around 5pm that day he drank a glass of vodka with Fanta and had gone to collect a takeaway when the crash took place.

He said: “He thought he was fit to drive.

“He turns down College Way and he goes on to Deane Road, his back wheel has clipped a curb and at that point he has lost control of the car and has collided with the wall.”

He added that the right axle of the car was damaged in the initial crash and when he drove off he was trying to park it to come and make sure everyone was okay.

The damage to the axle made it difficult to control and he then crashed into the parked car and was involved in the head-on collision.

Mr Patel told the court how the defendant started drinking socially at university.

In 2014 Patel suffered a family tragedy and this led him to drinking even more.

He added that the 25-year-old has realised he has an alcohol problem since the collision.

Mr Patel said: “He has shown remorse, he is embarrassed. This happened in the Deane Road area where people know him. His father has a shop in the area.”

Mr Patel added that the defendants family are Muslim and the fact he has an alcohol problem has brought shame on them.

Patel, of Longfield Road in Bolton, has now stopped drinking and has started seeking help for his problem.

Stephen Paine, magistrates chairman, told the court how this was a ‘prolonged serious case’ of dangerous driving’.

He added: “There is an extreme danger that you could have killed somebody.”

Following the crash, CCTV footage from a shop in Deane Road emerged showing it crashing into the takeaway, Deane Mini Market and a furniture shop.

It shows Patel’s car sliding sideways across the road before it slams into the wall.

Patel is now set to be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on January 2 2018.
