THE manhunt for a violent criminal who went on the run during a carjacking trial has come to an end following a planned police operation.

Carjacker Waqas Hussain was found hiding at an address in Heckmondwike by police.

He was on trial at Bradford Crown Court for a series of “terrifying” robberies when he went on the run.

He absconded alongside a 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, during the closing stages of their trial last week. The boy was arrested and brought back to court, but Hussain, of Fearnsides Terrace, Girlington, remained at large.

Hussain was handed a 12-year sentence in his absence for five counts of robbery and possession of a firearm, while the boy was locked up for six and a half years in a young offender institute.

Hussain appeared in the dock at Bradford Crown Court today in a hearing that lasted less than five minutes, flanked by three security officers and wearing a black hooded top and black trousers.

He spoke only to confirm his name and to plead guilty to breaching his bail.

The barrister who represented him during the trial, Shufqat Khan, confirmed Hussain had received a 12-year sentence from Judge Colin Burn in his absence, who reserved the Bail Act offence for himself.

Hussain appeared before Judge Neil Davey QC today, but will be sentenced by Judge Burn, who will not be sitting again in Bradford until Tuesday, August 29.

Mr Khan asked for the bail act offence sentencing to take place on Friday, September 15, and Hussain was remanded in custody to continue serving his sentence for carjacking.

Judge Colin Burn has said that Hussain will receive a consecutive sentence to the 12-year term for absconding during the trial and breaching the conditions of his bail.

During the trial, the court heard the robberies, which took place between October and December last year, involved weapons such as machetes, swords and baseball bats.

In one of the robberies, Hussain was one of two men who pointed a handgun at a woman sat in a Volkswagen Polo with her baby in Halifax Road, forcing them to get out of the car before making off with it.
