Just six of the 40 Bafta film acting awards handed out in the past 10 years have gone to a performer from an ethnic minority background.

Figures compiled by the Press Association show that in 2015 and 2016 every winner in the best actor, actress, supporting actor and supporting actress categories was white - the same as the Oscars, which was plagued by controversy over its lack of diversity.

In six of the past 10 years, white performers swept the board in all the Bafta acting categories.

This year could see a repeat performance - every nominee for best actor or actress is white, meaning that in the best-case scenario, 50% of acting awards would go to minorities.

Dev Patel and Mahershala Ali are nominated for supporting actor, and Naomie Harris and Viola Davis are nominated for supporting actress.

The six minority performers who took home gongs in the past decade were Chiwetel Ejiofor, Barkhad Abdi, Octavia Spencer, Mo'Nique, Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson.

Of those, only Ejiofor is British.
