A FLAT tenant who attempted to kill one of his neighbours with an axe and a hammer told detectives: "To be honest with you, I was trying to end his life."

Sam Wad-Hashimi lay in wait outside victim Victor Ogunidipe's apartment for two hours before attacking him with the weapons in a communal stairwell.

Speaking through an Arabic interpreter, the 36-year-old admitted attempted murder at Bolton Crown Court yesterday after his lawyers lost an application to get the charge thrown out.

Judge Timothy Clayson, the Recorder of Bolton, said: "On July 16 the defendant was living in a flat at 359 Deane Road, Bolton, and Mr Ogunidipe lived in an adjacent flat.

"Just after midnight Mr Ogunidipe returned to the flat and make his way up the communal staircase from the entrance door at the rear of the premises.

"As he reached the landing he was attacked by the defendant, who was armed with a hand axe and a hammer.

"The defendant's attack caused him injuries to his head, fortunately not serious in nature, and caused him to fall

down the stairs.

"It may be the defendant's attack was impeded to a degree by the confined area at the top of the stairs."

Judge Clayson said Wad-Hashimi later admitted the attack to police.

The defendant had told officers in interview: "Last night I lost my temperature. I was trying to kill him

completely.

"To be honest with you, I was trying to end his life."

Judge Clayson ordered the defendant's plea to an lesser alternative count of wounding with intent to be vacated.

Wad-Hashimi, of Deane Road, was remanded back in custody until his sentencing hearing for attempted murder at the crown court on January 3.

No detail about Wad-Hashimi's motivation for the attack was given in court but will be outlined by a prosecutor at

the next hearing.
