A MAN who was critically injured in an incident of violent disorder in Bradford is likely to face trial with five other defendants, a court heard today.

Mohammed Wariss, 21, suffered a sustained traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures and lacerations to his face during the incident in Hollybank Gardens, Great Horton, on October 3 this year, magistrates had previously been told.

This morning, Bradford Crown Court was told that Mr Wariss was still in hospital, and it was likely to be a further four or five weeks before he would be fit enough for release.

Ajaz Saddiq, 37, of Hollybank Gardens; his brother Shahid Saddiq, 35, of Waverley Road, Great Horton; and another relative, 38-year-old Nazim Hussain, of Fairbank Road, Girlington, Bradford, are all charged with wounding Mr Wariss with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

They are also charged with violent disorder in relation to the same incident, along with Tariq Adalat, 34, of Northside Terrace, Lidget Green, Bradford.

Dhaanish Akmal, 28, of Aberdeen Terrace, Lidget Green, is charged with possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Armed police attended the incident, at 8pm, after reports of gunshots, with damage being caused to a blue Audi A4, and a man being assaulted

Prosecutor David Brook told the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Roger Thomas QC, that Mr Wariss was very badly injured and had been in an induced coma, but it was alleged that he was the gunman.

Mr Brook added: “Given the complexity of Mohammed Wariss’s situation, we have set a trial for six defendants.”

Judge Thomas set a trial date for April 3.

The trial is expected to last up to four weeks.

He ordered the prosecution to serve its evidence, including phone and CCTV, by December 8, with any further forensic evidence to be served by January 12.

Defence statements and witness requirements are to be provided by January 6, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled to take place on January 20.

The Saddiq brothers, Hussain and Adalat all appeared via video link from Leeds Prison. Akmal was produced in court from custody.

All five defendants were remanded in custody, though Judge Thomas was to hear a bail application on behalf of Adalat later.
