POLICE investigating the death of a Bradford woman in Pakistan have reportedly arrested her uncle and an officer who was previously involved in the case.

Samia Shahid, 28, from Manningham, died in Punjab in July, and since then her first husband, Chaudhry Shakeel, has been charged with rape and murder, while her father Chaudhry Shahid has been charged with being an accessory to murder.

Now Pakistan news is reporting that her uncle, Haq Nawaz, has been held by police over claims he falsified medical files to make it look like she died of natural causes.

And Aqeel Abbas, a leading police officer in the investigation into her death, has been arrested on suspicion of trying to conceal evidence.

Samia died after visiting her family in July, and her husband, Syed Mukhtar Kazam, was told she died of a heart attack.

He believed she had been killed in a so called "honour killing," and raised the issue with Bradford West MP Naz Shah, who successfully fought for the Pakistani authorities to investigate the death.

After the latest arrests, Ms Shah told the Telegraph & Argus: "I'm very pleased with how the Pakistani authorities are dealing with this case. It has given me a sense of confidence that they will properly get to the bottom of what happened.

"These developments are very welcome, and completely unprecedented."

Shakeel and Shahid will appear in court on Monday.
