ONE of Bradford's oldest curry houses, the Sweet Centre, is to feature in an episode of a new food programme which airs on Monday.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman has teamed up with TV chef Ainsley Harriott and the duo have been on a Big Food Adventure.

The series sees Ainsley act as Len's guide and mentor as the pair embarked on a culinary road-trip around Britain, where they travelled in a special street food van.

Together they have been discovering the foods Len and his old-fashioned palate have been missing out on.

Filming in Bradford in July, the pair headed to City Park with their van, where Ainsley prepared onion bhajis and a peach chutney as well as vegetable pakora with a special sauce, inviting the crowds to try his efforts.

In addition the pair headed to the Sweet Centre on Lumb Lane, which is known for its authentic Kashmiri and Pakistani cuisine.

Manager Waqar Mughal, whose grandfather set up the business in 1964, said: "We were contacted by the production company who said they had heard a lot about our restaurant and its history and wanted to come and film in our kitchen.

"They came and filmed over two days and I actually cooked with Ainsley myself, having learnt everything from our head chef. I can't say much about the programme until it airs and I'm not allowed to say what we cooked.

"It was fun to make and Ainsley was exactly the same as how he comes across on TV. I picked up some tips from him and I think he learned something from us too. He makes a lovely chutney and he showed us how to make it as well."

During the pair's time in Bradford, Len had his first taste of a Pakistani curry and also sampled some Latvian cuisine.

The series is described by Fresh One Productions, the company behind the show, as a playful series with top chef Ainsley introducing Len to new foods, rather than the old-fashioned grub he is used to.

"Whilst the rest of the country’s palates have rapidly broadened over the last few decades – taking on exciting new flavours, recipes and cooking techniques – Len’s taste buds have stayed firmly in the realms of the past. He’s never tried curry, eaten spaghetti and even pizza seems exotic."

The series of ten features a different location in each episode, with the one filmed in Bradford and The Sweet Centre is to be shown on BBC One on Monday, November 23, at 3.45pm.
