A CAMPAIGNING dad, whose 15-year-old son was killed in a car crash, tried to help the victims of another smash, which has left two young men fighting for their lives.

The 21-year-old driver and 19-year-old front seat passenger of a powerful R-DSG series Volkswagen Golf suffered severe head injuries, and are in a critical condition in hospital, after it ploughed into three parked vehicles and hit an oncoming Range Rover early yesterday.

Witnesses described the scene in Northcote Road, Undercliffe, Bradford, as "carnage" and told how people in the Golf were screaming.

The horror crash happened only two days after the Telegraph & Argus revealed how road safety campaigners are planning to use shock tactics to hammer home the non-speeding message to young drivers in the district after new figures showed fire crews are attending increased numbers of collisions.

Since April fire crews have attended 84 road traffic collisions and the final year tally is expected to be up by a quarter on the previous year.

Amjad Malik - whose son Saliq was killed when a Volkswagen Golf GTi in which he was a passenger hit a parked car, lamp post and wall, in Gilpin Street, Barkerend, in September last year - told how he assisted paramedics after yesterday's crash.

Mr Malik, who lives close by, said he was alerted to the accident by his sister and went to the scene to help.

He said: "The black Golf was in the middle of the road. It had hit some parked vehicles and then was hit by a car coming the other way.

"Paramedics were on the scene and were working on the man in the front passenger seat. He clearly had a serious head injury. I held a torch and the medical drips for them while they treated him. They were clearing his airways, putting him in the recovery position and giving him medication.

"A man was in the driver's seat. He was moving and was responsive, but had also been badly injured.

"The rear seat passenger had got out of the car."

Mr Malik, who runs a road safety campaign, Consequences of Careless and Reckless Driving, following the death of his son, said it had been shocking and upsetting to be at the scene.

He added: "It brought back memories of Saliq. It was poignant for me to see the paramedics at work and what they go through at such an accident. It strengthens my resolve to get the safety message across. I can now go to kids and tell them what it feels like to see somebody in that position."

Mr Malik said he had spoken to relatives of the victims at hospital and been told the car had been hired for a wedding and they had gone for a ride in it.

Witness Mark Vuko, 24, whose van was one of the parked vehicles hit, said he was woken by a loud bang from the impact of the crash.

He said his neighbour's black Vauxhall Astra, his Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van and his girlfriend's Kia Sportage were all written off.

Mr Vuko said: "I could not see anything but smoke. I could not believe what damage it did. The cars were mashed from the impact. It was carnage. People in the Golf were screaming. It moved my van about ten metres."

The front seat passenger in the Golf, a 19-year-old Manchester man, and the 21-year-old driver, of Manningham, Bradford. were last night in a critical condition in Leeds General Infirmary.

Police today said an 18-year-old Manningham man, who was also in the car, has been released from custody without charge, having been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The crash happened shortly after 12.30am, as the Golf was travelling towards Idle Road in wet and foggy conditions. It struck the parked vehicles before colliding with the oncoming Range Rover, whose 43-year-old driver, of Bradford, escaped injury.

The wrecked Golf was spotted by passing paramedics on their way to another incident.

Fire crews from Bradford attended the scene at 12.40am and the two casualties were cut free and taken to LGI.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact PC 665 Ellis at the Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support team on 101.
