A FUEL station boss plagued by a teenage gang of thieves and troublemakers has been given a conditional discharge from court after he chased them from his Greengates garage.

Suhel Dalal has managed the 24-hour business on New Line and Carr Road for five years, but since February, he said the BP petrol station had been targeted by young yobs, shoplifting from the store, causing mayhem and hurling racial abuse at customers.

On April 11, Mr Dalal confronted the white teenagers and it was claimed he waved an iron bar at them to encourage them to leave the premises.

At Bradford Crown Court yesterday, the father-of two pleaded guilty to two charges, namely that he used threatening words and behaviour and then obstructed a police constable.

Judge Colin Burn gave him a 12 month conditional discharge and remarked: "What you did by producing a bar is outside of appropriate behaviour, even in the provocative circumstances you found yourself in.

"I've heard that unfortunately this kind of provocation seems to be continuing.

"Where it's all going to end, I don't know.

"I appreciate the difficulties you were placed under, but you've just got to phone the police,"

The judge added that any further attempt to take the law into his own hands would face a more severe sentence.

Speaking after the case, Mr Dalal, 30, said the same gang were still lurking around his premises at all hours and the most recent incident of theft had been logged with police on August 9.

"But then, as many times before, although we have clear CCTV footage, the police come back and say the value of the products taken is not enough for them to take it any further.

"These children are out of control and we have phoned the police more than 20 times in the last six months or so," he said.

Petrol station owner Yakub Valli called on the police to take more action.

"It is getting unbearable and sometimes my staff have been scared out of their wits.

"This is a petrol station, a dangerous place and on Sunday, because we wouldn't let them in or sell them cigarettes, they hurled coal and things from the outside displays all over the place.

"The police just aren't responding how we need them to do," Mr Yakub said.

He has written to Bradford East MP Imran Hussain for help, and his office confirmed he has written to West Yorkshire Police for clarification and was pressing for increased police action.

Sergeant Dave Collyer, of the Bradford East Area Neighbourhood Team, said: "We have received a number of reports from the petrol station in relation to recent anti-social behaviour and are working on a multi-agency approach to tackling the problem.

"One youth who was believed to have been involved was recently served with an order restricting his movements and his behaviour. A number of others have been warned of similar action if they are found to have been involved in repeated incidents.

"As well as regularly patrolling the area and using dispersal orders where appropriate, local officers have visited the station and advised staff about crime prevention measures they can take to prevent further problems.

"Anti-social behaviour in Bradford District will not be tolerated and officers are committed to working with victims and partners to resolve these issues."
