A mother whose toddler daughter fell to her death from an upstairs window at her Bradford home has been charged with her murder.

Gundeep Sanghera, 37, has been charged in connection with the death of 22-month-old Amrita Kaur, who plunged into the garden at the house in Delamere Street, Marshfields, on February 18 this year, and will appear in court shortly.

The toddler's mother was critically injured when she also fell from the window. They were found in the garden by a window cleaner.

The woman was taken to hospital and arrested on suspicion of murdering her child.

She is still detained in hospital but is due to appear before magistrates this week following the murder charge.

Mark Langan, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has been working closely with West Yorkshire Police in connection with this case.

"Having carefully considered all of the evidence presented to us, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to charge Gundeep Sanghera with the murder of Amrita Kaur and that it is in the public interest to do so."

At the time of the incident police confirmed that Amrita had died from injuries consistent with a fall and said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The police investigation was led by Detective Chief Inspector Jon Morgan.

Yesterday, a Bradford Police spokesman confirmed the mother had been charged with murder but declined to comment further.

Sanghera is on bail and will be brought to court from hospital.

Neighbours said the woman and her child were thought to have moved from the south of England about two months before the incident and the baby's father was believed to have travelled to West Yorkshire to identify her.

They told how the window cleaner had discovered the mother and baby laid on the ground at the back of the terraced house at 9.15am. The distressed window cleaner shouted for help and neighbours rushed to his aid.

A paramedic was seen carrying the child in his arms to the ambulance.
