Samosas and Briyani were the order of the day as residents held an Eid party in the street.

The residents of Leonard Street, Nelson threw a traditionally British Street Party to celebrate the occasion of Eid with their non Muslim neighbours.

The event aimed to unite the local community and break down barriers.

Householders from Hardarce, Bradshaw Close, Railway St and Thomas St were all invited to Leonard Street for an opportunity to get to know each other.

The residents were introduced to the local Mosque leader Imam Qais who spoke to the attendees about the festival of Eid which takes place at the end of the fasting month, During Ramadhan Muslims all over the world fast from sunrise to sunset and pray during the nights of Ramadhan for peace and unity. Among those at the party were local PC’s Karl Pickles and Jess Hartley who had an opportunity to introduce themselves to the residents over some Pakoras and Tea.

This was the first time some younger people had been to a street party like this.

Street party organiser Mohammed Amad of New Muslims Lancashire is already planning a bigger and better party for next year.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended this year and helped make the event a success.

“Many of the older residents now in their late 70s and 80s commented that the last time they had a street party was to celebrate the end of the second world war!

“Those who attended had a great opportunity to get to know their neighbours. Many people said that they would love to do something like this more often as it builds great community spirit”
