Students, parents and members of the community at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Tauheedul Islam Mosque have raised nearly £50,000 towards the Pakistan Flood Relief Appeal.

Mariam Ahmed, a Year 11 student at the school, said: “Many of the students and teachers at the school have family who were affected by the floods.

“As global citizens and Muslims, we just wanted to help. Students of all ages have taken part in the fundraising events and this donation is just the beginning – we hope to raise much more during the next few months to help those affected.”

Lord Adam Patel, President of Tauheedul Islam Mosque, said: “We wanted to come together as one community to express our solidarity with those affected.”

The donation is to be presented to a Bolton-based international relief and development charity, and will be used to rebuild homes and vital facilities destroyed in the floods.

Mufti Hamid Patel, Principal and Chief Executive of Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School, said: “For a school and community the size of ours to raise such a huge amount of money is quite incredible and a real testament to the humanitarian spirit we have here. In the UK, we are very fortunate and so should never forget people less fortunate elsewhere, especially when something as devastating as this occurs.”

The money was raised through worshipper donations and events in the mosque, and by sponsored events such as car washes, fundraising activities such as cake sales, and other community projects led by the students of the school.

The huge donation is just one aspect of Tauheedul’s charitable work as part of its Citizenship specialism. The school also plans to launch an appeal for Eid gift packs for those children living in camps and shelters in Pakistan. Students at the school will also sponsor displaced children to continue receiving an education while they are homeless.

Mr Muhammed Ahmed, Director at UWT, said: “We are delighted to be working closely with Tauheedul, who have been fantastic in raising this incredible sum to help with our vital relief work over in Pakistan. To see everyone in the community putting their heart and soul into raising so much money for those in real need has been truly inspirational.”
