Man admits father's manslaughter

A man has admitted causing the death of a father-of-two who was dragged along the road after trying to stop a car driving off after an attempt to steal his van stereo.

Balbir Matharu, 54, died following the incident in Stratford, east London, in January 2006, in which he was struck by a Ford Mondeo car.

Albert Willett, 26, pleaded guilty to Mr Matharu's manslaughter at the Old Bailey.

He will go on trial tomorrow with his brother Tommy, 24, accused of Mr Matharu's murder.

Tommy Willett, who lived with his brother at a travellers site Clays Lane, Stratford, also denies the alternative charge of manslaughter.

Judge Christopher Moss told the jury that the start of the trial had been delayed because Albert Willett had pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
