A dentist has been cleared of racially abusing a police officer after footage shot on his mobile phone led to his court case being dramatically thrown out.

Omer Shaukat Butt (31), who is based at the Unsworth Smile Clinic in Parr Lane, was charged with two offences after an officer confronted him outside Fairfield Hospital about his car.

It led to him enduring a six-month ordeal wrapped up in the legal system, which ended at Bolton Crown Court on Monday when the prosecution dropped the case on the grounds that there was not enough evidence.

He said he was delighted to have been proved innocent and now wants an independent investigation into the incident to ensure no-one else suffers like he did.

The incident took place on March 6 when Dr Butt arrived at the hospital in his Porche Turbo car at 1.40pm, in time for his six-year-old daughter Muzna's hospital appointment at 2pm.

A passing police officer told him where to park and then confronted Mr Butt as he got out of his car. The officer asked him to produce insurance documentation.

Dr Butt, of Sheepfoot Lane, Prestwich, said: "I produced my licence and told the officer I did not have my insurance certificate with me, but could ask my brother to bring it. He then told me that my car would be impounded and that I shouldn't bother calling my brother."

Anxious about his car, he called his brother Monzer, to ask him to bring the documents while the argument continued.

"The officer became very rude and aggresive and asked me why I kept using my phone. Another officer then arrived and said to me that I'd been arrested, when I hadn't," said Dr Butt.

According to Dr Butt, the first officer then stood on his foot and removed his mobile phone earpiece. Mr Butt called 999 to report that he was being assaulted.

"They were very unhelpful on the phone and said that they could only log the crime and give me a reference number," said Dr Butt.

Eventually, his brother and wife arrived and the insurance documentation was produced.

As the mobile phone film footage begins, the officer is heard doubting the document's validity.

He calls the insurance company and, even though he fails to verify the insurance was invalid, he continued to insist Dr Butt was uninsured.

Dr Butt alleged that the officer then accused him of being racist, and when Dr Butt said his opinion was that the officer was guilty of racism, he was arrested and, a month later, was charged with a public order offence and racially aggravated public harassment.

He said: "I was so shocked. It's a good job my brother was there or else what would have happened to my little girl? They impounded my car, took my finger prints and treated me like a criminal.

"I spent the last six months going to magistrates court and then going to crown court determined to clear my name knowing that I had my phone evidence and CCTV footage. The prosecution wouldn't let me have a copy of the 999 call and on Monday they said they did not want to press ahead with the case."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said they had received a complaint and it would be "inappropriate" to discuss the matter.
