AN East Lancashire religious leader has been honoured for his work in improving community relations.
Canon Chris Chivers, who is Canon Chancellor of Blackburn Cathedral, received a community award at the British Muslim Honour Awards, at the House of Lords.
Canon Chivers, director of exChange, the cathedral’s community cohesion and interfaith development agency, was praised for his efforts.
Awards organiser Yasmin Sheikh said: “Whether through the appointment of his colleague Anjum Anwar, the first Muslim to work on the staff of a cathedral anywhere in the world, or through his quiet determination to have the voices of British Muslims heard, better understood and respected, Canon Chivers has clearly made a huge difference to the whole community not only in Blackburn or even in Lancashire but nationally and beyond.”
He was named Man of the Year in the North West’s Fusion Awards.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, added: “This award highlights some of the many ways in which our two communities work together for the good of society.”
