The new University Technical College (UTC) Bolton is set to this September.

University Technical College (UTC) Bolton is a new school for pupils aged 14-19 that specialises in health sciences and engineering technologies.

These areas are strengths of the University of Bolton and in demand in businesses locally and nationally. The school has a clear aim to prepare pupils from age 14 for university and employment leading to jobs as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurse, optician, engineer, computer programmer and many more.

UTC Bolton works in partnership with employers and Universities to combine GCSEs and A-levels with employer projects aimed to give the students real life experience and prepare them for University and the working world. All UTC Bolton students will complete well regarded GCSE and A Level subject awards.

The University of Bolton is helping develop the UTC supported by many local and national businesses and organisations.

These include Cohens, Genix Healthcare, NHS Bolton, Electromech, Olympus, Vernacare, RLR Motorsport Movetech UK and Asons Solicitors, Warburtons, Rapid Education and JOST UK.

Students are taught in a £10 million purpose built building with specialist laboratories including Electronics and Telematics, Lego and Robotics, Assisted Health Technologies, Energy and Fluids, Pharmacy, Dental and Ergonomics as well as the traditional Physics, Chemistry and Biology labs.

UTC Bolton provides each student 50 days’ of work experience on practical projects with the University partner and employers.

UTC Bolton’s offers a significant enrichment curriculum. This could include Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE); Duke of Edinburgh/York Awards; sports and physical education as well as a range of clubs and societies.

This will give students opportunities to develop their self-confidence, leadership and wider life skills. This will enable students to move successfully into higher education and/or the workplace.

UTC Bolton is located in the town centre on the University’s campus in the Bolton Education Zone.

This will give excellent transport links for students coming from surrounding towns UTC Bolton will open in September 2015 with 240 students, reaching 600 by 2017.

Current applicants come from Bolton, Wigan, Leigh, Radcliffe, Bury, Blackburn, Barnsley, Chorley, Manchester and Oldham and for 2015 entry UTC Bolton is over subscribed.
