Parminder Nagra has received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Leicester.

Speaking to graduates an at times emotional Parminder said, "A degree is something that I had always wanted but had thought it was something that had just passed me by. I feel very fortunate to be stood here right now, especially in this rather fetching gown, I know my mum will love it."

"Recently I have been thinking a lot about the decisions and choices we make in our lives and it occurred to me that we are not always able to control every moment of your life and sometimes that's ok.

"I suppose what I am about to say is something that, I'm sure, you are all well aware of, but it is sometimes good to just be reminded of it.

"Throughout life you will set yourself challenges and goals, and sometimes it may feel like it is not going your way.

"But the one thing you should trust is in your belief in yourself, that's as long as you recognise the signs that life offers you and you grab those opportunities, doors will open up for you.

"And those times you feel stuck or down, try doing at least just one new thing once a week, whether it be sat on a different part of the sofa or going on a rollercoaster ride, even if you are absolutely petrified."

Professor Gordon Campbell said, "Here in Leicester we think of her as one of us, one of whom we are immensely proud. Parminder was born in Belgrave, in the north of the city."
