A FORMER Blackburn youth MP who continued to help the community as well as juggling her studies has received an award for her hardwork and dedication.
Amal Idriss was recognised by staff at her college who awarded her the Individual Performance Award.
Blackburn College’s chair of governors Bill Taylor described her as ‘exceptional’.
The 18-year-old student has worked hard to change the negative perceptions about young people, her stance on bullying and street safety.
And she has juggled this with studying a BTec in Business with Legal, setting up the college magazine, and was elected as a student governor at the college.
The former Our Lady’s and St John’s High School pupil, who was youth MP in 2010, said: “It’s really nice to feel appreciated by the college — I have put all my effort into my student life here.
“I chose Blackburn College because it offered a variety of courses, amazing facilities and a grown-up campus style feel.
“Both my time here and my course have given me the qualifications, life experience and opportunities to excel in my chosen university degree and career.”
Amal, who came to Blackburn from Somalia with her family in March 2004, is currently studying Criminology and Criminal Justice at University of Central Lancashire and hopes to become an Immigration Officer. Despite ending her reign as youth MP in 2010, Ama; has worked to make a difference in her community.
Sir Bill Taylor, chair of governors, said: “Amal has made a valuable contribution to both student life and the community and thoroughly deserves her award.
“She became student governor after a very successful election campaign across college where she gained a very high percentage of the votes, and her skills have also extended to setting up the college magazine and being its founding editor.
“Amidst this very busy schedule, Amal has worked hard on her Business with Legal course attaining excellent marks and a place at university. She is an exceptional student and I wish her all the very best.”
