A popular primary school head teacher who retires after 18 years of service this summer has thanked parents, pupils and staff for all the ‘wonderful memories’.

Gaynor Stubbs began her role as head teacher at Wensley Fold Church of England Academy, Blackburn in January 1998 and has seen the school re-invent itself.

When she began at the school it was in special measures but in 2010 it was classed as Outstanding by OFSTED inspectors.

She said: “It feels very strange as the school has been such a large part of my life for so many years.

“My son is getting married in a couple of weeks which is very exciting and that is keeping me very busy.

“I think it will probably hit me in September when everyone goes back to school; however on good advice from teacher friends who have retired I’ve booked a holiday during the first week in September!”

She said the school had changed remarkably since she took over.

“We’ve had a number of alterations to the building, including a Space for Sports and Arts in the Community and more recently in 2011 a major extension resulting is us now being two form entry.

“When I became head teacher in 1998 the school required special measures, we very quickly turned it around and become what was then a Beacon school.

“We took on the challenge of setting up and running the Children’s Centre in 2007 and we were designated a National Support School in 2011. Furthermore in 2014 we became a National Teaching School.”

Wensley Fold is quite a distinctive primary school in the borough in that it is set within its own woodland area.

It continues to be very sought after during admissions.

“I believe that the school is unique. Sometimes it’s not tangible but so many people who visit comment on a feeling that you have as soon as you enter the building.”

Gaynor says she will be visiting her son in Australia when she retires. “I’m looking forward to spending some of the winter months out there which will include all of the family getting together for Christmas 2016 in the sun.”

She had this message for all parents and pupils: “Thank you so much for the support and wonderful memories.

“It’s been a privilege to have served the school for the past 18 years, however everything that has been achieved could not have been accomplished without the fabulous team of staff who work at the school.

“I wish my successor and the school all the very best for the future as I am confident it will go from strength to strength.”
