A new group is looking for young members who want to bring the rhythms of Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean to Tameside.

Seventeen-year-old student Farheen Saloojee hopes Asian young people will step out of their comfort zones and discover something new.

The A level student is working as a community engagement officer for Global Grooves, the charity behind the project.

An experienced Brazilian percussionist since the age of 14, part of her role is to encourage young people from minority communities to join the group.

She said: "It's common for young people in any community to stick to what they know instead of exploring.

"When I first started drumming, my parents weren't too keen on the idea due to my cultural background. But it came to a point where I thought to myself I had to do something about it because music, now and forever, will be a huge part of my life."

The Vale Music Ensemble is a brand new music-making venture for 11-18 year olds, featuring steel pans and Afro-Brazilian percussion alongside guitar, bass and drums. Vocalists, brass and saxophone players are also required.

Based at The Vale community arts centre in Mossley, which fully opens this summer, the project offers opportunities for both experienced and new musicians and singers.

Holly Prest, artistic director, said: "Participants will work towards an original live performance and a studio recording.

"They will enjoy free weekly musical tuition with experienced tutors and get to discover hidden talents and extend their existing musical skills.

"We also hope that everyone taking part will find a real sense of belonging and connection with other people and make friends for life. The most exciting thing is creating the blend of new faces and new music, so anyone aged 11-18 with a passion for music is welcome to sign up. Just bring your raw enthusiasm!".

All participants will have access to free rehearsal and recording space at The Vale for six months after the end of the project.

Free evening taster sessions for adults keen to revive their brass skills, try out steel panning, sing in a choir or join a group guitar session are also running throughout April, May and June. Each session will last one hour, and you will receive expert advice and guidance from experienced tutors.

An induction day takes place on Saturday 18 April at The Vale, Vale Mill, Micklehurst Road and the group will work towards a live performance at the end of June.

There are no auditions, but participants will need to sign up and commit to attending six weekly rehearsals and three weekend sessions in Mossley. Applications are online at www.vale-music.co.uk
