Four sisters donated more than 80 gift boxes to women in refuge to celebrate Eid.

Dr Bushera Choudry, 34, and her sisters managed to persuade their friends to each spend £20 to fill one of the boxes, which have now been distributed to the five women’s refuge centres in Manchester.

The former Pleckgate High pupil, who now works as a GP in Salford, said: “This was just something my sisters and I came up with and wanted to do to celebrate Eid.

“There are five refuges across Manchester which look after about 80 women at a time, so we tried to fill up a gift box for each of the people living there. These women are often fleeing domestic violence and don’t really have anything.

“I’ve come across it quite a lot as a doctor, so wanted to do something to help.

“We managed to get all my friends involved via Facebook, and literally within a day we got pledges to fill all the boxes with new items.”

Many of the boxes were filled with clothes, but others were filled with children’s toys, games and puzzles, at a total cost of more than £1,600.

Dr Choudry added: “I want to thank everyone who donated a gift because many of these women fled their homes with nothing.”

Two of Dr Choudry’s sisters are also doctors. Dr Naylea Choudry is a GP at Darwen Health Centre, while Dr Sahdia Choudry works as a locum in Blackburn.

Their other sister, Farhat Choudry, is the headteacher of a school in Bolton.
