ABF Tiger Awards finalists

The finalists for the inaugural Asian Business Federation Tiger Awards have been announced.

The awards, which were open to all ethnic minority-owned businesses in the North-West, cover seven categories: business of the year; business personality of the year; start-up of the year; workforce development and skills; international company of the year; green business; and outstanding woman in business.

The finalists include Iqbal Ahmed OBE of Manchester-based international seafood processors Seamark and Amina Patel who began her successful bakery business, Meena Bakery' in Blackburn in 1980. Amina is now firmly back on the road after a devastating fire at her bakery in 1996.

The judging took place on 30th October at the Reebok Stadium. The six judges present included; Nighat Awan OBE, Mukhtar Hussain QC (head of Lincoln House Chambers) and Gerry Yeung OBE (founder of Yang Sing Ltd).

Mukhtar Hussain QC said, "Some of this year's applicants were very young. It's encouraging to see such enthusiasm and entrepreneurial strength amongst young people, and there are definitely some businesses and individuals to watch."

Mubarak Chati, general manager of the ABF, says: "The first annual Tiger Awards follows numerous requests that we've had to host a regional business awards for black and ethnic minority businesses.

They will help recognize and reward the unsung ethnic minority entrepreneurs who contribute some £1.7 billion to the North West economy each year."
