Sweet Dreams rises from the ashes

A business whose premises was destroyed in a huge blaze has risen from the ashes after launching a new product.

Now bed and cabinet manufacturer Sweet Dreams is looking for new headquarters following the success of its Well Being mattresses.

The firm's previous base at Primrose Mill, Martin Street, Burnley, was destroyed in a suspected arson attack in July 2005.

Fifty firefighters from across East Lancashire spent hours tackling the inferno, which could be seen as far away as Blackburn.

Some fire crews had to run for their lives leaving equipment behind as the massive blaze ripped through the mill.

Since the blaze, Sweet Dreams, which was formed in 1988, has operated from a temporary site in Martin Street.

The launch of its new range will see the firm produce 1,000 mattresses a day and have a turnover of more than £20million.

Riaz Ahmed, managing director, said the new base would allow the firm, which employs 270 people, to combine its manufacturing and distribution functions under one roof.

He said: "The last 12 months has seen a significant uplift in sales and, with the Well Being' range now well established and new products already in the pipeline and we're in a strong position to expand further.

"The proposed move to new premises will mark an important step forward for Sweet Dreams, particularly as it will accommodate our projected growth and also bring greater coordination to our manufacturing and distribution functions."

Well Being products use memory foam and spring systems which mould to individual body shapes and support joints and muscles.

The firm supplies almost 800 independent retailers across the UK, and also exports to the Republic of Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Holland.

As part of the business' future plans, it is looking to develop international trade links further, whilst also investing in additional product development.

The new move will be funded through a loan by Lloyds TSB corporate markets division in Blackburn.
