Islamic TV station Ummah Channel is to close at the end of the month it has been announced.

The channel will cease broadcasting on Monday 31 July reports BizAsiaLive.

A message on the channel states, ‘The channel will no longer broadcasting from 1st August from Sky platform – for further information please contact Team Ummah.”

The Blackburn based channel aired a mix of religious shows and debate shows. It was, when it opened, one of the first Islamic Channels that looked to air more opinionated programmes and looking to engage more with British Muslims.

In recent years though, barring shows fronted by Mohammed Shafiq the channel it seems has failed to attract a wider range of viewers that may have led to owners pulling the plug.

A message on Twitter thanked viewers and supporters.

Mohammed Shafiq who was a regular on the show said in a Facebook post, “After nearly nine years I'm sad to announce that Ummah Channel is closing after broadcasting for the last time on Sunday. It's been a great ride, I hope I've done justice to the thousands of hours of programmes I've done highlighting issues around the world.

"Along the way you've supported me, prayed for me and yes corrected me at times. It's been this support that has guided me as a broadcaster.

"I've absolutely loved every minute of it and will cherish the memories.

"In terms of my future broadcasting career, I'm in discussions with a number of networks and will soon reveal my next chapter in this amazing life."
